ABOUT THIS BOOK

The first Canadian Accounting Software survey was developed to provide Canadian businesses with an independent evaluation of the accounting software available in Canada. The survey report provides an analysis of the results and provides the reader with a comprehensive feature comparison of the various products that qualified for the survey.

In order to provide a realistic comparison the accounting software products were grouped into four categories. At the higher end is the LAN (local area based) comprehensive program with a price point starting around $10,000 for the software plus consulting fees. The mid-range division includes accounting software programs that sell in the range of $2,500 and above plus consulting fees. The small business section includes well-known programs such as Simply Accounting, MYOB and QuickBooks. The final division covers the DOS based accounting programs that still available today and have a substantial base in Canadian businesses.

The survey was completed by consultants and accountants who recommend, install and support accounting software programs. Just over 1,000 individuals participated in the survey and a total of 1,867 responses were received by the cutoff date at the end of November, 1999.

The survey was divided into three sections. The first section rated the accounting software on ten different factors including, Stability, Performance, Flexibility, Ease of Use, Feature Set, Reporting, Integration with Microsoft Office, E-Commerce, Third Party Software, and Technical Support. The second section rated the accounting software by module. The third section provided each respondent with an opportunity to make general comments about the accounting software products that they were rating.

The survey provides a comprehensive insight into the accounting software used by Canadian small and medium sized businesses. The results are presented in text, graphical and tabular formats. For each accounting program, there is a sample cross section of the unedited comments provided by the respondents. In addition, the report contains a detailed feature set analysis on each program with over 1,000 different features per program. Separate appendices in the report cover accounting software selection and how to do a needs analysis.
